The Shared Culture of Byzantium and Islam
Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at 3:30 p.m
The Ohio State University Faculty Club Grand Lounge 181 South Oval Mall Columbus, Ohio SEVENTEENTH THOMAS E. LEONTIS MEMORIAL LECTURE IN MODERN GREEK STUDIES
"The Shared Culture of Byzantium and Islam" Today's confrontation between global democracy and a perceived 'axis of evil', as well as the antagonistic nationalisms of Greece and Turkey, go back to the early medieval conflict between Byzantium and Islam. Yet the religious divisions brought about by the Islamic conquests - whether temporary or permanent - of the Near East, Anatolia and the Balkans have not prevented the peoples of these areas from sharing a common lifestyle. The Arabs and later the Turks adapted to the urban environment of the lands they occupied, absorbing and developing the skills, tastes and learning of Greco-Roman antiquity. At the same time, the Greek inhabitants of the areas remaining within the Christian Empire of Constantinople borrowed heavily from the material culture of their Muslim neighbours. This lecture looks at some of the ways in which those borrowings were received and perceived by Byzantines in the 11th to 13th centuries. *********************************************************
